Farewell to Alan Riggall........'Sunday Paper Boy'

Sunday 26th.November saw yet another Saltfleetby custom fall by the wayside when Alan Riggall (who has now moved to Louth) discontinued the Sunday paper delivery service. Back in the 1930’s Mr. Waumsley of Grimoldby, who had only one leg, used to get off Wright’s bus at the double bends and deliver the papers down the Front Street. At that time Sunday papers were priced at two old pence each, so by the time he had paid his bus fare there wouldn’t be much profit left.
Several people have taken the task on over the years, but none had the staying power of Alan who took over the round in the early 1950’s and without fail, no matter what the weather , delivered the papers for over fifty years. I wonder if he was the longest serving paper boy in the county.?
Those of us he served so admirably over the years thank him most sincerely and wish him well in his new home. May he have a long and happy retirement.
