What is Rimac?

For those of us who live locally, we know what 'Rimac' is! But remember, Saltfleetby is now world wide and there are people out there who have never heard of 'Rimac'. So I will try, with the help of others to tell you about it: -

Rimac is believed to take its name from the ship ‘The Rimac’ built at Whitehaven in 1883 and wrecked off Saltfleet in Dec 1874.

Rimac - is part of the Lincolnshire, Saltfleetby -Theddlethorpe Dunes. Situated on the East Coast of England, Mid-way between Cleethorpes and Skegness. It is a National Nature Reserve owned by English Nature and managed in conjunction with Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust

Rimac is a place for both Able-bodied and Disabled alike (having an easy access nature trail, with level surface suitable for wheelchairs). Rimac is one of the best coastal areas for wildlife, having an impressive range of habitats, plants, birds and insects.

The freshwater marsh area, with pools and dykes created by English Nature, supports many interesting insects and plants, including water plantain, water parsnip, yellow flag and marsh orchids. Among the insect fauna are 10 species of dragonfly and damselfly, various water beetles and a water spider and is also  home to water voles, water shrews and the rare Natterjack toad.

The dunes began forming some 500 years ago, and the same processes of wind and tidal action continues dune formation on the site today. The dunes support a great variety of flowers and grasses, which are maintained by regular grazing, mowing and clearing. Spring and Early Summer sees species such as mouse-eared hawkweed, cranes-bill, storks bill and cowslips supporting a range of butterflies, including the recently re-established brown argus.

Along the beach can be found the typical bits and bobs (wood, shells, light bulbs (enough the light the whole of Lincoln sometimes) etc.) left by the tide, but at other times the receding tide leaves behind the unexpected.

The coastline along the Eastern edge of Saltfleetby, known as Saltfleetby-Theddlethorpe Dunes (which includes Rimac) has a lot of history, it has not always been a nature reserve!

I was interested to find out more about the history of the nature reserve and I had been told "Talk to Bert Richardson, he can tell you about it" so that is just what I did!
