Statement:
-
It
was with mixed feelings that I stood up at the end of the service on
January 5th to announce that I would be leaving Saltfleetby.
Paul
and I have been very happy here, and have made many good friends.
But
our circumstances have changed, with Paul deciding to retire this year.
The very week that he decided to retire, I saw an advertisement for the
post of team Vicar in Dereham. I knew that I missed the fellowship of
working in a team, and Norfolk is my home county. So what else could a
Norwich City supporter do but apply for the post?
I
was surprised to be interviewed, and even more surprised to be offered the
post, but having met the rest of the team, and visited the churches, I
felt that moving to Dereham was the right thing to do.
My
last service in this area will be a joint service, to be at St Peter's on
Easter Sunday, and the Bishop of Lynn will license me into my new
parish on May 23rd. It will be good if as many of you as possible can be
at these services. Bridget
The
Rev. Bridget Hill and her husband Paul came to Saltfleetby from 'Holy Trinity' at Louth. They
moved into Saltfleet Rectory in 1998 to take up the position of
'Priest-in-charge' at Saltfleetby and Theddlethorpe.
News
of the 'New Vicar' for Saltfleetby travelled around the Village fast!
"A Female!" (Grumble, mumble, women in the Clergy, never!
What next! etc. etc.)!!
Well
how wrong could they all have been!
It
soon became apparent that Bridget was special, bringing her own warmth,
caring and style of Christian Faith to the people of Saltfleetby.
Young
and Old have come to know Bridget, not just as a Vicar but also as a friend.
Both she and Paul will be greatly missed by all.
The
Bishop of Grimsby, the Rt. Rev. David Tustin, carried out the 'Licensing' of
Rev. Bridget Hill B.A. on Friday 23rd. of January 1998 when St. Peter's
Church at Saltfleetby was full of parishioners, clergy and well wishers from
Louth and district.
Below
is an extract from the first letter written by Bridget, for the 'Marshlander
Magazine': - January 1998
Here
is a little about us so that we won't be complete strangers when we meet
later this month. Paul and I met at teacher training college in Lincoln and
we were married a year after we left. I went to teach Maths at Immingham
Comprehensive, Paul to a middle school in Grimsby.
Later
I felt that God was asking more from me, so I studied on a non-residential
course and was ordained in 1987.
I
left teaching to be part-time curate in Louth, then team vicar, now
Saltfleetby and Theddlethorpe.
That's
the past. I don't know what the future holds. But I do know that whatever
there is to come then none of us have to face it alone that wherever we are,
whatever we do, then God is there with us.
On
behalf of the Village of Saltfleetby, I would like to say: - Almost In your
words, Bridget.
We
do know that whatever there is to come, you will not have to face it alone,
that wherever you are, whatever you do, then God is there with you! GOOD
LUCK, to you and Paul
