THRIVING IN SOLOBY

Saltfleetby boasts a thriving Women’s Institute whose members meet monthly to follow an interesting annual programme.

50 YEARS IN SOLOBY

The first meeting of Saltfleetby WI was held in the village hall in May 1950. On 9th May 2000 a grand 50th birthday celebration was held, attended by 100 friends old and new. The birthday cake was cut by two of our founder members. They are pictured here with the County Chairman.

WHY WE EXIST

To pursue the aims of the WI movement: namely, to enable women interested in rural life, its arts, crafts, sciences and other cultural subjects, to work together to widen their knowledge and improve conditions.

 WHERE DO WE MEET?

Apart from visits to places of interest, normal meetings are held in: - Saltfleetby Village Hall.

WHEN?

At 7.30 pm on the second Tuesday of every month, except August.

Additional events and visits are announced as they are arranged.

WHAT HAPPENS AT A MEETING?

The meeting begins with a welcome from the President,  followed by the Roll Call. This is not as daunting as it sounds; rather, it is a very informal way of noting who is present while getting one’s brain-cells ticking over, often with amusing results! Routine business is discussed next, despatched as briefly as possible, and then any arrangements for forthcoming visits are dealt with. Next, the speaker for the evening will give a talk, accompanied by a demonstration and slides, etc, if appropriate; after their presentation most speakers welcome questions and this can promote further lively discussion. A tasty supper, provided by volunteer hostesses for the evening, is enjoyed by all and the competition winners are announced. 

COMPETITIONS

Two competitions are held each month: one entitled 'Flower of The Month' and the other usually related in some way to the speaker’s topic for the evening. Members enjoy these and look forward to the chance to admire and discuss what has been displayed. 

NEW MEMBERS

New members are always welcome at our meetings.

 If you have thought about joining but have not quite got around to doing so, let me assure you that you will be made very welcome. We are a small and friendly group of women gathered together to pursue a wide range of interests together in friendship.
