'The Vickers Family' At Vickers Pond. By Colin Vickers |

George Colin -
Raymond Noel - John William Vickers 1944 |
|
After the war Jack returned to Saltfleetby and worked with his
father and brothers in the family business of well-boring. In 1921
he married a local girl Vera Epton and they had three children John
William, born 20th August 1924, George Colin, born 1st June 1926,
and Raymond Noel, born 25th December 1928.
In the early 1930’s, work was scarce in Saltfleetby, so when Jack
was offered a job in Hull he had no hesitation in taking it, and he
was to spend the rest of his working life lodging in Hull, and
travelling back to Saltfleetby each weekend.
In 1938 Jack moved the family to “The Fisheries” with the intention
that while he was in Hull, Vera could look after the shop and John
William, his eldest son, take care of the outside jobs and assist in
the shop when needed.
Unfortunately Vera was taken ill in January of 1939 and passed away
on the 9th February. Jack carried on working in Hull, and his two
sisters came from Scunthorpe to run the shop and look after the
family.
Jack re-married in 1940 to a girl, Thelma Dixon, who he met when
working in Filey.
As a result of this marriage four children were born, but more of
them later. |

Nancy - June 2006 |
John William, Jack’s eldest son went to school at
Saltfleetby, leaving when he was fourteen, and after a spell
working in Hull, he enlisted in the Royal Engineers in January
1944, and saw active service in France before being posted to
Singapore. He spent several years there, and after marrying
Nancy Carter, an A.T.S. girl he met whilst stationed in the
south of England, returned home to be demobbed and went to work
with his uncles in the family firm.
Here he stayed for the whole of his working life, taking on the
role of Managing Director in 1963, a position he held until the
firm closed down in 1986. His health started to decline in 2000,
and he finally suffered a massive heart attack on July 14th 2004
from which he didn’t recover.
John and Nancy had two children, Susan Barbara and Julie Ann.
Susan married Denis West and they had two girls Sarah and Sadie.
In 1992 Sarah married Ian Cuppin and had two children Laura and
Lucy. Unfortunately, Sarah and Ian parted and the children spend
time with each parent.
Sadie married Simon Davison in 2004 and they live in Louth.
Sadie is a schoolteacher at Kidgate school in Louth, and Simon
is the manager of Spencers newsagents also in Louth. Julie
married Robert Fox. They divorced, and she then married
Christopher Paul. and they had one son Alex James.
Sadly, Julie died suddenly in 1995. |

George Colin started school life in Saltfleetby, and when he
was eleven years old went as a fee-paying pupil to King Edward V1th
Grammar School in Louth. Leaving there in 1942, he spent two years
working in Hull and then in April 1944 signed up to serve seven
years in the army. Saw service in Egypt and Kenya.
On de-mob Colin returned to work in Hull, having in the meantime
married Brenda Smith, a Grimsby girl he had met when she was in the
Women’s Land Army stationed at Saltfleetby. They had two children,
Brooke Leonard and John Linton.
From 1952 to 1966 Colin worked with a firm of foundation engineers,
work which took him to all parts of the country, and when the head
office was moved to Rugby, he and the family moved there, and stayed
until 1970 when Colin returned to Saltfleetby and took over the
running of the village shop.
Unfortunately. Brenda was taken ill in 1978 and passed away in
October 1982. |

Brooke
was born in April 1953, went to school in Anlaby, Willoughby, Rugby
and finished his education at the Grammar school in Louth, and then
went as a trainee manager to Wm. Jacksons the Hull based grocery
firm, who had outlets in Louth and Grimsby, and it was while he was
working in Grimsby that he was beaten up trying to arrest a
shoplifter. This changed his attitude to shop life, and on leaving
that job went to work with his uncle in the family firm of J. W.
Vickers & Sons. Here he stayed until 1986 when the firm closed down. He married Christine Rawlings in August 1988 and their daughter Lucy
was born in September 1993. Brooke joined the ambulance service in
1987 and is still there. (Jan. 2004) Christine is a primary
schoolteacher in Grimsby. |

Linton was born in January 1956, went to school in Anlaby,
Rugby and Louth, and then went to work for J. W. Vickers & Sons.
He stayed there for a few years before moving on to Nottingham where
he got a job with The Royal Ordnance Factory.
In August 1991 he married Nicola Holmes, and they had three
children, Rebecca, born March 1990, Ella, Born March 1992, and
Brodie, born March 1996.
Linton continued to work at the Royal Ordnance Factory until he was
made redundant in 1998 and it was at this time that he and Nicola
parted.
Nicola has re-married and Linton has a new partner, Jane, who also
has two children Loren and Callum. |

 |
In 1983 Colin married Evelyn Nevin, and they stayed in the shop
until Colin's retirement in 1991 when they leased the shop building,
and continued to live at 'The Fisheries' looking after the fishing
lake and caravan site.
In 2001 they sold 'The Fisheries' and moved down the road to a
bungalow, which had been built on the site of 'The Angel' public
house.

Raymond Noel was also a fee-paying pupil at the grammar
School in Louth where he stayed until he was sixteen, and then went
to work for T. M. Lusby and Son, first as a labourer and when he was
old enough he took up lorry driving. Here he stayed until he was
called up for national service in the army.
On completion of that he worked in Hull for a while, then moved to
Aldershot, and became a civilian driving instructor with the army.
In the meantime he married Josie Woollard, a girl he met when
stationed in Aldershot and they had four children, Sandra, born in
December 1950, Malcolm, born in February 1953, David, born in June
1963, and Sally-Jayne, born in May 1966.
When Noel left the driving instructors job in 1962 he then, in
succession, became parts manager at three garages, first with a
British Leyland dealership, followed by spells with Opel and Fiat.
In 1986 he once again had a career change and went into the business
of shop keeping, taking over a newsagent and grocery outlet. He
finally retired from this in the early 1990’s. Unfortunately Josie
developed a brain tumour and passed away in October 1992. Regarding
the children, Sandra married Roger Kyme and had two children, Lisa,
born in July 1968 and Nicola, born in March 1971. Nicola married
Paul Crow in 1996 and they have one son Charles John who was born in
January 1999.
Lisa is still single. Roger and Sandra now own a firm that
specialises in bathroom equipment and I believe they have something
like ten outlets in the south of the country. Malcolm married Susan
Reeks in 1976 and they had three children Rebekah, born in March
1979, Phillip born in February 1981, and Laura born in June 1984 -
(Laura lives with her partner, Jonny Glass, and on the 31st.July
2005 she gave birth to their first child, a Daughter Ellie. -
Raymond's first Great Grand-daughter on the Vickers side! ). Malcolm
and Susan were divorced some years ago and Malcolm now lives with
his partner Denise Huggins. Malcolm is a joiner by trade and does a
lot of work for Roger and Sandra, fitting bathrooms. David is also a
joiner, and he too does work for Roger and Sandra. David married
Diana Dolman in 1994 but they do not have any children.
Sally-Jayne and her partner Steve Rasmussen have three children
Serena, born in August 1988, Dudley born in June 1994 and Eleanor,
born in August 2002
In September 1994 Noel married Eunice Sandell and they live in
Midsomer Norton in Somerset. |
