There is a National Nature Reserve, comprising wildflower meadows, dunes, salt marshes, freshwater marshes and beaches. Part of the Reserve is a recently designated SSSI. The Reserve is of national importance as a habitat for rare flora and fauna, and has a specially built easy access trail with special viewing points for disabled visitors to access the area at Rimac. The bridge over the River Eau, leading to the Reserve, has been specially strengthened to enable transport for disabled visitors to access the area. The Reserve has many well-signed footpaths along the dunes and there is access to sandy beaches beyond the salt marsh.

Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust has recently purchased 35 acres of land adjacent to the River Eau and extensive work has been carried out to create what will become wetlands (now completed). This should greatly increase the population of birds suited to this habitat and subsequently the number of visitors to the area.
